How To Get Y2K Aesthetic On Your TikToks

Just when you thought Y2K was over, it’s back! Those of us who were alive at the turn of the millennium will recall midriff-baring, butt-skimming ensembles, crimped hair, metallic jackets, sticky lip gloss, bubblegum pink everything, and velour tracksuits. Fast-forward to the ’20s, the 2020s that is, Y2K style is back with a fresh twist. It’s back with a vengeance, taking some of our favorite makeup, hair, and fashion looks from the original trend and revamping them into something much better. The refreshed Y2K aesthetic is here for you to experiment with on your TikToks, YouTube videos, and much more, all thanks to YouCam Video.

What Is Y2K Style?

For those of you who blocked out Y2K, or for those who weren’t alive at the time, this trend is back in full swing. The Y2K aesthetic is more of a variety of looks as opposed to one cohesive style. Y2K fashion includes everything from shiny, Matrix-inspired fabrics to high-cropped designs. The name of the game was everything over the top. For hair, you’ll find lots of crimped waves and hair colored with chunky streaks. The Y2K makeup trend involved brightly colored eyeliner, razor-thin eyebrows, glittery pastel eyeshadow, and super glossy lips.

A lot of us, especially those who already did the Y2K trend the first time around are asking ourselves, why does it resonate so much now? Experts agree that a mix of nostalgia, social media, and technological advancements are bringing this look back around a second time. When it comes to nostalgia, fashion historians refer to this sense of nostalgia as the “20-year cycle,” which is about the length of time it takes for past styles to look fresh and interesting again.

In terms of social media and technology, we’re seeing celebrities posting this trend and it then getting transmitted instantly across the world in a way that wasn’t possible in the 2000s.

The Return of Y2K Aesthetic

Just because the look is back doesn’t mean it’s a copy and paste of what we’ve seen before. This time around, we’re seeing things change slightly. Instead of shirts just a few inches above the waist, we’re seeing shirts that are cropped above the belly button and with a higher neckline. Pleated skirts are back, but instead of being ultra-short, we’re seeing the length more around the mid-thigh. Tie-front tops are making a resurgence, but they are tied near the chest now as opposed to the belly.

In 2021 and 2022 the Y2K aesthetic leaves some of the less fashionable pieces behind, while relying heavily on the ones that can be reimagined for a more modern look and feel.
