Traditionally, right before the holidays, we take a look back at the previous year, and analyze the top beauty and fashion tech metrics. We will continue this tradition this year, and look at the emerging trends for the upcoming year 2023.

The Most Popular Virtual Try-on Experiences

To begin, let us look at the most popular virtual try-on categories in 2022. Looking at the beauty vertical, the most loved virtual try-on experience involved eye makeup, generating 42% of all global beauty virtual try-ons. The second most popular category was lip color with 26%, followed by face makeup with 15%.

Looking toward the fashion category, here we also have a clear popularity contest winner, with wig virtual try-on taking the crown by generating 46% of all global fashion virtual try-ons. Ranked second is eyewear with 18%, followed by headband with 13%. We also see some of the new categories, such as earrings and necklace, climbing up the leaderboard. We predict that virtual try-on for jewelry category will be trending in the upcoming year, as jewelry-related projects with our brand partners picked up in the second half of 2022.

Having generated 1.3 billion lip color try-ons in 2022, we can safely say that bright pink is still the crowd favorite. However, soft, muted red, and dusty pink shades are trending globally.

Raising the Brow

Eye makeup garnered 2.1 billion try-ons – the highest of any category, with eyebrow try-on being the most popular sub-category.

Consumers are turning to virtual try-on for fashion inspiration, with eyewear and jewelry being some of the most frequently tried-on fashion categories, surpassing 219 million try-ons.
