Kao Corporation’s introduction of the ‘Live Hair Color’ function (powered by Perfect Corp.’s AI Virtual Hair Color Try-On) in October 2020, allowed Kao’s customers to simulate hair color try-on in real time using the latest AR technology. The function, which is popular with Kao’s customers, has eliminated the need to use hair bundle color swatches - the traditional tool to support hair color selection in stores.
Reducing Plastic Use and Achieving Sustainable Development Goals with AR
Since October 2021, KAO no longer provides plastic hair bundle color samples, previously amounting to averages of around 56 tons per year. This has led to a marked reduction in the amount of plastic manufactured for the brands. The AR-powered hair color simulation tool allows users to sample Kao’s hair dye products on their own hair by simply scanning the QR Codes* on in-store POPs and the back of product packages with their smartphones, making it possible to enjoy sampling colors without the need for conventional hair bundle color swatches.
