The best time of day to measure your finger is at the end of the day, during the evening.
Throughout the day, your fingers tend to swell slightly from activity and warmth. Measuring in the evening ensures you get your finger's largest size. This guarantees that a ring purchased with this measurement will be comfortable at all times and won't feel too tight, even when your finger is swollen.
Pro-Tip:
Avoid measuring in the morning: Your fingers are often smaller when you first wake up due to a cooler body temperature.
Avoid measuring when your hands are cold: Cold causes your fingers to shrink, which can lead to an inaccurate, smaller measurement.
If your measurement falls between two sizes, we strongly recommend choosing the larger size.
Opting for the slightly larger size is the safer, more comfortable choice for several reasons:
Comfort is key: A ring that's a little loose is far better than one that's too tight to wear or gets stuck on your knuckle. You'll appreciate the extra room when your fingers swell in the heat.
Easier to resize: It is typically easier and less expensive for a jeweler to make a slightly large ring smaller than it is to make a small ring larger.
Clears the knuckle: Your ring must be large enough to slide comfortably over your knuckle, which is often the widest part of your finger. The larger size ensures a smooth fit.
Special Note: If you are buying a wide-band ring (6mm or wider), you should definitely consider going up a half-size. The wider surface area makes the ring feel much snugger on your finger.
Temperature has a significant impact on your finger size due to the natural physiological response of thermal expansion and contraction.
In Hot Weather: Your body expands blood vessels to cool itself down, causing your fingers to swell and get larger. A ring will feel tighter during warm weather.
In Cold Weather: To conserve heat, your body constricts blood vessels, causing your fingers to shrink and get smaller. Your ring will feel looser and may even be at risk of falling off.
Because of this fluctuation, the best way to find your true ring size is to measure 2-3 times at different points in the day (e.g., midday and evening) to find a comfortable average. A perfectly sized ring should slide over your knuckle with some ease when your hands are warm, but not be so loose that it could slip off when they are cold.
